Son of
Maximianus Herculius he married
the daughter of
Galerius but was excluded
from the succession line because of the agreement taken by the tetrarchs
not to start any dynastic succession. After the death of
Costantius
Chlorus in 306 a lot of competitors were claiming the imperial
titles and start fighting among them. Maxentius was one of them and
was acclaimed by Roman citizens and by the praetorian guards. He called
his father back to the imperial throne. Against him
Galerius
sent
Severus who was betrayed by his men
near Ravenna and killed in 307.
A meeting was organized in Carnuntum (Petronell in Austria) in October,
308 to solve the situation, then Maxentius was again excluded from
any official charge (there were appointed again two Augusti:
Licinius
(West) and
Galerius (East) and two Caesars:
Maximinus Daia (East) and
Constantinus
(West) ) but
Constantinus and
Maximinus
didn't accept this decision and made themselves appointed Augusti.
After the death of
Maximianus (310),
and of
Galerius (311), Maxentius who
had Italy and Africa under his control decided to ally with
Maximinus
Daia against
Constantinus and
Licinius.
Constantinus marched over Italy at
the beginning of 312 welcomed bythe Italian towns, and defeated
Maxentius, who drowned in the Tiber river, during the battle of
Saxa Rubra (near Pons Milvius in Rome) on October 28, 312.
